Water Quality in The Villages, Florida

Are you one of the 45k+ individuals in The Villages that gets their water supply from North Sumter Utility? Or do you have family, a friend, golf buddy, or neighbor that is? Then please deeply consider this blog post and pass this information on! Ready? Here goes…

Contaminants found in the water from this municipality:

EWG’s drinking water quality report shows results of tests conducted by the water utility and provided to the Environmental Working Group by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, as well as information from the U.S. EPA Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO). For the latest quarter assessed by the EPA (July 2018 – September 2018), tap water provided by this water utility was in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.

3 CONTAMINANTS detected ABOVE health guidelines

Includes chemicals detected in 2015 for which annual utility averages exceeded an EWG-selected health guideline established by a federal or state public health authority; chemicals detected under the EPA’s Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3) program in 2013 to 2015, for which annual utility averages exceeded a health guideline established by a federal or state public health authority; radiological contaminants detected between 2010 and 2015.

Here’s the list of contaminants and their harmful effects to human life:

1.) Chromium (hexavalent) is a carcinogen that commonly contaminates American drinking water. Chromium (hexavalent) in drinking water may be due to industrial pollution or natural occurrences in mineral deposits and groundwater.

2.) Radiological contaminants (cancer causing)

This utility detected Radium, combined (-226 & -228), Radium-226 & Radium-228. Radiological contaminants leach into water from certain minerals and from mining. Drinking water contamination with radioactive substances increases the risk of cancer and may harm fetal development

3.) Trihalomethanes are cancer-causing contaminants that form during water treatment with chlorine and other disinfectants. The total trihalomethanes group includes four chemicals: chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform.
